Little research has been done to ascertain the impact of anxiety or depression on outcome. We studied patients undergoing a variety of day-case operations. Their anxiety and depression scores were compared with their operative outcome. Sixty-two patients had a pre- and postoperative anxiety or depression score. Thirty-nine had been given benzodiazepine medication before admission. There was no significant correlation between anxiety or depression scores and length of operation, satisfaction score or postoperative morbidity. In this series of day-case procedures, anxiety and depression are not independently associated with outcome, although they may predispose patients to postoperative nausea and vomiting.[Hydrocortisone in the treatment of adrenal insufficiency].
